In 1959 the new built Waldkrankenhaus in Erlangen was opened and replaced the Marienhospital which had become too small. It developed into a primary health care hospital according to the hospital requirement plan of the state of Bavaria with the usual specialist departments. In addition, the Waldkrankenhaus incorporates:

  • The Orthopaedic/Rheumatology Department of the University Hospital
  • The Urological Department of the University Hospital
  • Geriatric rehabilitation
  • Professional school of nursing (since 1957)
  • St. Elisabeth geriatric care centre (since Dec. 2007)
  • Acute geriatrics (since April 2010)

In 2005 the Waldkrankenhaus changed its legal form to: Waldkrankenhaus St. Marien gGmbH Erlangen. We, the Congregation of the St. Francis Sisters of Vierzehnheiligen, are its shareholder.

In 2017 we transferred the Waldkrankenhaus and the Marienhospital from the Congregation of the Franziskusschwestern von Vierzehnheiligen (in India: St. Francis Sisters of Vierzehnheiligen) to the Malteser Deutschland GmbH. The right of residence for us sisters continues and the convent in the Marienhospital has been preserved.

1945-1959 The Marienhospital in Erlangen was the first hospital of our community;
Only two years later, in 1947, a school of nursing was incorporated.

After the completion of the Waldkrankenhaus in 1959, the Marienhospital was continued as a home for the elderly.

1986-2000 Continuous development of the nursing and care concepts and corresponding construction measures resulted in a modern geriatric care centre.

In 2009 the Marienhospital changed its legal form to: Seniorenpflegezentrum Marienhospital GmbH Erlangen. We, the Congregation of the Franziskusschwestern von Vierzehnheiligen (in India: St. Francis Sisters of Vierzehnheiligen), are its shareholder.

In 2017 we transferred the Waldkrankenhaus and the Marienhospital from the Congregation of the Franziskusschwestern von Vierzehnheiligen (in India: St. Francis Sisters of Vierzehnheiligen) to the Malteser Deutschland GmbH. Until 27.11.2021 the convent in the Marienhospital had been preserved.
